I’m not always great at relaxing, but I’ve been making a conscious effort to slow down and de-stress after having an incredibly restorative spa experience while traveling. I certainly haven’t explored all the spas in my home state of North Dakota, but I’m working on it!
Here are three of my favorites. It’s not a complete list, nor is it geographically inclusive, since I live in West Fargo and it’s easier for me to explore spas closer to home. I’d love it if you left me your suggestions in the comments below. I’d like to try a few new places so I can bring you a longer list of spas at this time next year.
Cedar Canyon Spa, Medora
I didn’t expect to find a spa in the middle of the tourist-friendly western town of Medora. I certainly didn’t expect it to be good. But it is.
Cedar Canyon Spa is a snug little space that combines homey, western decor, like a ornate, pressed metal ceiling and rustic wood, with ornate chandeliers and cozy robes. There are a few chairs out front for hair services and pedicure and treatment rooms tucked in back.
The ownership kindly gifted me a hydrotherapy session, so I relaxed in mineral salt bath in a clawfoot bathtub, which felt heavenly after running around the wooden sidewalks of hiking in Theodore Roosevelt National Park for the previous 48 hours.
The spa also does a raindrop therapy treatment that I’m curious about. It combines Young Living essential oils and massage and is inspired by a Lakota healing ceremony. I’ve never seen anything like it offered anywhere else, so I’m intrigued by it. Next time!
Inside Cedar Canyon Spa
Hair Success Salon and Spa, Fargo
I adore steam showers (this was the main reason I joined my gym!) and Hair Success Salon and Spa is the place that started my obsession. Be sure to allow plenty of time before or after your treatment (or both!) to take a nice, warm shower in the herbal steam shower.
I’ve had lovely massages and a facial here, but I keep going back for the pedicures. I know that sounds basic, but pedicures here are really luxurious and the polish stays on days (if not weeks) longer than anywhere else I’ve tried. There are also some great half day and full day packages if you want to go all out.
Affiniti Day Spa and Salon, Fargo
I have two words for you — relaxation room. I had a lovely massage at Affiniti Day Spa and Salon (they have heated treatment beds — yay!), but this chilled out relaxation space really sold me. It includes a sauna, steam shower and a sitting area with a fireplace so you can unwind with a comfy chair with a magazine and a cup of tea. Use of the room is free with a massage, skin or body treatment and $25 if you get your hair or nails done.
The salon also offers a warming Blueberry Detox Firming Facial, which looks really soothing. Facials include an upper body massage and you can ask for hand warmers during the massage if you want to be really cozy. I’ve had a massage here and that was lovely as well.
