5 Fall Layering Pieces

  1. Boxy Short Sleeved Sweater: The short sleeves keep you cool during the day, but the chunky knit is warm at night. The shape is interesting, so keep the rest of your outfit streamlined. Try it with jeans and and wrist full of chunky bracelets or layer a slim, long sleeved top underneath for added warmth and interest.
  2. Colorful Tights: Add a pop of color and extend the life of your gauzy summer dresses with the perfect pair of tights. I swear by Topshop — there’s a huge variety of colors, the tights are very opaque so the colors are true and they last forever. (I’ve been wearing a black pair since 2007, which is insane when you think about it.)
  3. Gauzy Wrap: Tissue-thin and ultra versatile, this is one of my favorite fall pieces. Wear it closed and belt it, or layer it over summer tanks and tees for an added layer in cool restaurants and movie theaters. Because it’s so thin, it’s easily stowed in a bag, which is perfect for days with lots of temperature changes.
  4. Summer Weight Scarf: Knotted around your neck, it’s a focal point. But draped around your shoulders, a summer scarf can be surprisingly warm. Just make sure it’s big enough to wear as a wrap if you need to.
  5. Ankle Booties: Since there’s no ice to slip on, go as high as you dare. They look cool with tights and leggings and a little tough with skinny jeans. Booties with suede, fur and more delicate fabrics will all look good now, but will get wrecked when the snow flies, so experiment with fun textures while you can.
