Earlier this week I got a sweet note from the lovely Midwest in Style informing me that she’d nominated me for The Liebster Award. Yay!
This award is designed to introduce bloggers (and our readers) to other bloggers who are doing new and interesting things. It’s always an honor to be recognized by your peers. And this is a great chance for all of us — writers and readers — to connect with new people.
In this post I’ll tell you some things that you probably didn’t know about me. And I’ll introduce you to a few other bloggers you should check out. They write about food, travel, beauty, books and everything in between. I think you’ll like them!
If they decide to take the challenge, they’ll answer the same 11 questions I did (or make up their own…I’m kind of naughty about following arbitrary rules) and nominate other bloggers as well.
So here’s a little about me!
1. How did you get into blogging?
I’ve always taken a ton of photos and carried a notebook around, but I never really knew why. I took a trip to Paris a few years ago and I realized that I wasn’t living the kind of life I wanted. (You can read more about that in this post, if you want.) After that, I made a concentrated effort to honor my creativity and give it room to grow.
I traveled a lot for work at the time, so I started writing about what inspired me everyday — cool shops, scenery, mom and pop restaurants, what I was wearing and anything else that crossed my mind. Blogging regularly gave me the experience and courage I needed to make the jump into freelance writing as a career.
2. If you could have anyone’s closet, whose would you choose?
Kate Moss and Alexa Chung always look fantastic.
3. Who’s your celebrity crush?
I met Charlie Hunnam once and he was incredibly endearing. Oh, and he’s pretty nice to look at too.
4. What is your favorite TV show?
“The Newsroom” is over and I’m still in mourning. The performances were dead on and Aaron Sorkin’s writing is always so sharp. And I’ll always love “Project Runway”, even though it makes me scream at my TV sometimes.
5. Silver or gold?
I wear more silver in everyday life, but I love yellow gold and rose gold too, especially when it’s really delicate or unusual.
6. What is your favorite meal?
Indian food! I could eat curry and naan every single day.
7. If you could travel anywhere, where would you go?
Morocco, Turkey and India are high on my list. All three countries seem so colorful, diverse and vibrant. I’d spend all my travel money on textiles and jewelry and food.
8. What is the one beauty product you can’t live without?
I love Clinique’s All About Eyes concealer. It covers dark circles like it’s supposed to, but I use it as an eye shadow primer or in place of foundation in a pinch.
9. What are your favorite fashion trends right now?
Super wide-leg, 70’s-style flares are my favorites — the bigger, the better. I wore my aunt’s bell-bottoms in high school and I’m still kicking myself for destroying them by wearing them to paint sets in summer stock theatre.
I also love midi skirts and ultra-dark, vintage-inspired denim, the kind that look like something Jane Birkin would have worn. And I’m excited that army green is having a moment because it’s one of my favorite neutrals.
10. What is your favorite way to relax and unwind?
I’m a big believer in the restorative power of books and coffee. And I’m a champion napper.
11. Where are your favorite place to shop?
Downtown Fargo has so many great boutiques, I seriously can’t list them all. The prices range from reasonable to high end and the shopping scene is really vibrant. I love grabbing a coffee and just window shopping for the afternoon.
I’m a Shopbop.com affiliate, which is dangerous in the best possible way, because now I’m becoming obsessed with Helmut Lang and Diane von Furstenberg. I also like asos.com and I stop by Topshop, H&M and Zara when I’m traveling.
And no matter where I am, I always, always stop for thrift stores, garage sales and estate sales. It used to drive my husband nuts, but now I run Prairie Style Vintage, so I just tell him it’s for work and he’s cool with it.
Finding a way to make money doing what you want to be doing anyway is sort of my M.O. It’s been working pretty well so far!
Here are the blogs I’m nominating for the The Liebster Award. I encourage you to check them out.
