Beer, Cheese, Dessert And A Getaway: What Readers Really Want For Valentine’s Day

Forget the roses — Prairie Style File readers want decadent desserts, local craft beer, a romantic getaway and a cooler full of aged parmesan for Valentine’s Day. (And not necessarily in that order.) And that’s why we all get along so well.

The most recent #PrairiePlaces Twitter chat just confirmed that I really do have the best readers in the world. From sexy restaurants to sleepy prairie town getaways, their picks are definitely not just for couples.

Here are a few reader suggestions for indulgent experiences and decadent treats from Minnesota and North Dakota, just in time for Valentine’s Day.

Where do you go to enjoy a totally luxurious/romantic/sexy atmosphere?

@DoYouEvenPaleo: Lately,@PorterCreek has been our go-to spot for date nights. Love the atmosphere, love the food!

@saintPaul: Our food scene wants to get close and personal with you (and your loved one). Here are a few Saint Paul restaurants (okay, pretty much all of them) to get you started.

@NorthDakota: If you’re looking for romance on the prairie, you need to experience the #NDLegendary @cdplodge.

What are the most indulgent experiences and decadent treats in your city?

@NaomiOrre: Gigi’s Cupcakes in Fargo. Or a yummy chocolate/cappuccino shake at Kroll’s.

@SaintPaul: @legacychocolate calls our name, and we also love @MadameMiel.

@DoYouEvenPaleo: This may sound lame, but @sandysdonuts!

(Alicia here: Noooooooo! It’s not lame. I don’t normally like donuts, but these things are transcendent. And angel icing is maybe the best thing ever.)

@NorthDakota: Widmans Chippers, treats from Nichole’s in Fargo or Choc-Raspberry Wine from Dakota Sun Gardens.

@DoYouEvenPaleo: I think a favorite indulgence of mine is all the local breweries! They all have good things to offer, & have events too…I love the atmosphere of Drekker, but I haven’t been to (or tried beer from) every local brewery. I don’t drink beer often!

@SaintPaul: Have you seen the desserts at Cossetta’s?

(Yep, Alicia again: If you’ve read this far, then you have seen these desserts. They’re pictured in the photo above this question.)

@Katey911 I need a trip back to Cossettas for their amazing aged parm. Cheese can be dessert, right?

I cannot stop interjecting… Yes. Yes it can. And then we went on a cheese tangent…like we do. @Katey911 suggestions bringing a cooler to haul massive amounts of cheese back home. I feel like this is a totally solid travel/dining tip.

Now we’re planning a beer and cheese tour of Saint Paul and Fargo — on different days, of course. If you want to come along, let me know. I’m not even kidding. I feel like we can totally make this happen.

Question 3: If you absolutely had to celebrate Valentine’s Day, where would you go? What would you do?

@Naomi Orre: HoDo or Mezzaluna locally; I’m still hoping one day to go to Manny’s in Mpls (downtown).

@NorthDakota: I’d start with one of these 7 #NDLegendary options!

@DoYouEvenPaleo: If I had to go out, it would probably be to @RhombusPizza, where we got married. But if we were really going all out, I’d go to Mezzaluna or the Hodo. Dessert at Nichole’s Fine Pastry.

@Saint Paul: @ComoZoo hosts Valentine’s Day dinner in a garden, and it’s stunning.

Where do you go to unwind, relax and get away from it all?

@DoYouEvenPaleo: It may seem counter-intuitive, but my gym! My home away from home. (FYI: It’s @CrossFit701, if you’re curious.)

@FeistyEatsMedora in the winter. Off season quiet & fun. Wibaux, MT also to visit Beaver Creek Brewery.

@SaintPaul: In Minnesota, getting out on the ice is always the answer.

What will you be doing on Valentine’s Day?
Which experiences would you add to this list?
