So we basically skipped spring and went straight to summer this year and I realized my summer wardrobe needed a major overhaul.
Luckily, I found Hey Ocean just in time. The shop’s California-sporty vibe has such a fresh, breezy appeal.
I stopped by the Grand Forks location, but you can also find the original Hey Ocean store in Bismarck.
If you’re not in the area, you can also shop online.
Both shops stock women’s clothing, accessories, shoes and swimwear, although Grand Forks manager Kelly Bernsten says the selection at the Bismarck store is a little more boho, while the Grand Forks store skews a little more sporty.
You’ll find some shoes and accessories for guys woven throughout the selection as well.
I know a lot of you will really respond to their selection of athletically-cut dresses, hoodies and sweatshirts. I don’t find a lot of shops that stock sporty pieces that go beyond the same old tried-and-true basics, but Hey Ocean merges comfort and style nicely.
You’ll find lots of casual pieces with that not-trying-too-hard feeling that plays so well in the Upper Midwest. If this is your aesthetic, you’ll love shirts like the one shown above from Sub_Urban Riot and probably the simple style lines of Vancouver-based Sitka Brand, too.
I was instantly drawn to the colorful selection of maxi-dresses. They’re my favorite look for summer (so easy!) and Hey Ocean stocks a ton of colors, patterns and silhouettes beyond the usual empire waist style, which can be tricky to wear — and sometimes brings back painful maternity clothes memories.
I also really like that I have a local spot to buy Havaianas sandals. Mine have lasted forever, but I’d love to add another pair into my summer rotation.
Speaking of shoes, TOMS fans will love the variety of styles and colors Hey Ocean carries. The classic TOMS shape isn’t really my style, but I’m really into these open-toe wedges.
I even saw little baby TOMS on the Bismarck store’s Facebook Page. So. Freaking. Cute.
Lots of the other brands, like Gentle Fawn, have a breezy, bohemian vibe that will be perfect for the festival season. And you’ll find lots of rompers, shorts and tanks to round out your summer wardrobe.
Or you can pick up some accessories like cute jeweled headbands, earrings or a new hat or wallet. They also carry some fun gift items too.
And as you’d expect from a store called Hey Ocean, you can pick up some sunscreen and a new bathing suit or two for your next trip to the lakes.
