Inspiration: Fresh Flowers

“Arranging a bowl of flowers in the morning can give a sense of quiet in a crowded day — like writing a poem or saying a prayer.”
-Anne Morrow Lindbergh

My husband Derrick surprised me with flowers for our anniversary and, as always, I loved what he put together. This crazy combination of lilies, fat orange roses and candy-colored mums is the perfect counterpoint to all the serious fall colors in stores and in nature.

Derrick is freakishly good at giving flowers. He doesn’t care what “goes together” — he just trusts his instincts. His decisions are mostly driven by three thoughts – “That looks cool”, “I’ve never seen that before” and “Why not?”

My favorite local florist – and frequent Derrick collaborator – is Kimberly Hess from Prairie Petals. She didn’t start out with any formal training, just a strong artistic sensibility and a love of gardening.

When someone showed her the “right” way to arrange flowers, she took one look at it and decided she liked her way better. She’s made a successful business out of breaking the rules and she hasn’t slowed down since.

So break some rules. Trust your instincts. And surround yourself with things that make you smile.
