“Simplicity is the keynote of all true elegance.”
– Coco Chanel
Everything inside RH Standard is thoughtfully selected and beautifully designed.
Owner Rachael Hammarback started her career as a Kenneth Cole fashion stylist in Manhattan and she brings that skill set and her critical eye to her current career. Every detail in her upscale boutique in downtown Grand Forks is carefully curated, from the soothing slate gray walls to the artfully displayed clothing on the racks.
RH Standard offers premium brands for men and women. Every carefully selected garment is either a statement piece or well-constructed wardrobe staple. These are clothes you save up for, items you invest in, invest in, pieces that will take you beyond just one season.
“Our customers want to stand out,” says Rachel. “Quality matters. A look’s longevity is important.”
I’m seriously coveting the menswear on the shelves at RH Standard. I’m in love with these fabulous Stone Rose shirts. They’re impeccably made and that little peak of contrasting fabric at the neck and cuffs is the the kind of special detail that sets both the shirts and their wearer apart from the pack.
Guys can also find polos, really fantastic premium denim and fashion-forward blazers and suits. RH Standard is a breath of fresh air in men’s fashion in a state that desperately needs more options for men. The women’s fashion scene has been evolving so beautifully over the past few years and I think RH Standard will help lead menswear in North Dakota in the right direction.
Women’s fashion is well represented as well. I’m always happy to see BCBG and Black Halo available locally and most of my favorite pieces in the shop were super-flattering designs from these lines.
You can find a few North Dakota designers and makers displayed in the store as well. Jewelry designer Jennifer Kohls from Mayville has several pieces for sale and the soy candles (poured in Lisbon) make excellent hostess gifts.
A confession: I took these photos earlier this summer, which is an embarrassingly long delay for a blogger. I actually totally thought I’d posted this story weeks ago, so it’s very possible that some of these summer items are already sold out.
The good news is the selection looks remarkably consistent from season to season. You’ll always find a fresh take on classic pieces with special little details.
And if you can’t find the perfect thing — or if you don’t even know where to start looking — the staff at RH Standard really go above and beyond in terms of service. Rachel can put her styling expertise to work for you with a personalized wardrobe consultation, special orders and delivery.
The store also offers custom tailoring, which means that they can dress more body types than your average boutique. RH Standard stocks women’s clothing in XS-XL and can accommodate a variety of men’s sizes, up to a 52 long.
Even if you’re not in the area or if you’re not shopping at the moment, you should definitely follow RH Standard on Facebook. The shop regularly posts helpful styling tips, from how to tie a tie to different ways to drape a scarf, as well as fun fashion quotes and photos of new pieces as they come in.
