The Style Olympics: Great Britain

English Countryside
Nobody does eclectic better than the Brits. Just look at their crazy range of fashion contributions; the same nation that reveres posh tweeds and elegant equestrian wear is also the birthplace of punk.

I love the mix of the practical – – wellies, chunky knits, tights and the iconic Burberry Trench — and the flamboyant, like extravagant hats, the liberal mixing of prints (especially florals and plaids) and a cheeky, high/low street style scene.

Sites I Love:
WishWishWish: A fun blog with a sweet, almost retro flare
5 inch and up: Dreamy high fashion
Vanessa Jackman: Street fashion meets high fashion
Style Scout: A cool street style site

A Little Light Reading:
British Glamour: This is so much better than American Glamour! My friend Liz and I once got stranded in Gatwick airport and spent our last handful of change on this magazine and a couple of screwdrivers. (The drinks, of course, not the tools.) Totally worth it.

Great Shops:
Topshop: One of my favorites, this store stocks a fabulous mix of trendy and classic pieces and the absolute best tights on the planet. Kate Moss has a line here as well.
All Saints: Everything here is dark, urban, utilitarian and so, so compelling.
asos: I love asos for on-trend pieces at a seriously amazing price. I have had a small obsession with this store since they opened a US site.
Camden Market: My friend Heather took me here a million years ago and it was the first time a clothing market blew my mind. You’ll find a great selection of vintage, new and alternative clothing and accessories and absolutely no chain stores in sight.

Get The Look:
Try a classic tweed jacket or anything plaid — a traditional tartan if you’re feeling conservative or something wilder for a punk edge. Bonus points for mixing in another pattern! If you keep it in the same color family, you won’t look too crazy.

    1. It took effort not to post a million punk pictures – there are so many great shots out there! I used to think this was second place for me too, but now I’m not so sure. I think I’ve been influenced by all four countries more than I realized, and it’s harder than I thought to rank them. That’s why the dialogue is so fun!
