Two Timothy Ray Retrospectives

Day Garden/Night Garden by Timothy Ray

The Fargo-Moorhead art scene lost a light when Timothy Ray passed away late last week.

Timothy Ray was born in Indian Head, Saskatchewan and educated at the University of Manitoba and the University of Arkansas. He taught at Minnesota State University Moorhead until 1997.

I didn’t know Mr. Ray well, but I posed for him and a group of local artists in his sunny studio back for a few times back in college and I always found him to be extremely kind and professional. And even though he kept up with his figure drawing, he created big, beautiful abstract pieces.

You can find his work in The Millennium Library in Winnipeg as well as at West Acres and The Hotel Donaldson in Fargo. Another Fargo institution recently purchased the painting shown at the top of the post. Do you know which one?

For a more complete understanding of his work, check out the two retrospective shows this winter and spring. The retrospective tour starts at The North Dakota Museum of Art in Grand Forks and then moves to ecce: art + yoga in Fargo in mid-April. The ecce exhibit also includes several exclusive pieces.
