I’ve heard it said that how you ring in the New Year sets the tone for the year to come. I’m not a superstitious person, but I love the idea of creating a party that sets the mood for the future you want.
I’ve been in the party planning business in one way or another since I was 21, so I usually ring in the new year at a bar or a club, pressed tight against both friends and strangers.
(One notable exception was the year there was a blizzard and almost everything was closed or cancelled — including the party my client was throwing — so Derrick and I trudged to our neighborhood bar in a white-out and rung in the new year wearing snow boots.)
It just seemed right to do something wildly different this year. So I put out our wedding china and invited some of our closest friends for an intimate midnight brunch.
I lit lots of candles for ambiance, chose a winter-y white and silver color scheme and prepped the food ahead of time — I’ll post the menu later this week so this post doesn’t get too long — so we could spend our time drinking craft beer and mimosas (and sparkling pear juice for baby and me — thank you Erin!) and catching up.
And, because we can all only do elegant and reflective for so long, we marked our glasses with these brilliant, re-usable drink tags Derrick got at for my Christmas stocking, listened to Zooey Deschanel and her ukelele (and Joseph Gordon-Levitt) sing “What Are You Doing New Year’s Eve” (find it here) and played a few (dozen) spirited games of Uno Roboto.
